The Arctic offers an extraordinary diversity of landscapes and wildlife across its four iconic regions: Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic. From Svalbard’s polar-bear-roamed pack ice and glacier-carved fjords, to Iceland’s volcanic coastlines alive with seabirds, each destination reveals a different facet of the High North. Greenland impresses with immense icebergs, thriving Inuit communities, and one of the world’s most dramatic ice sheets, while the Canadian Arctic invites travelers into a realm of ancient cultures, narwhals, beluga migrations, and remote tundra archipelagos. Together, these regions form a vast wilderness where nature, culture, and polar history intertwine in some of the most awe-inspiring expedition voyages on Earth.

Spitsbergen and the Svalbard archipelago offer a tremendous wildlife and birdlife experience, as well as a fascinating lesson in glaciology. The islands are the northernmost inhabited places on the planet and would be permanently locked in ice if not for the moderating influence of the Atlantic Gulf Stream current. First used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, the islands are now celebrated as a breeding ground for many seabirds, along with marine mammals and the elusive polar bear.

Greenland is the largest island in the world and lies off the east coast of Canada, surrounded by the Arctic Ocean. The combination of vast, icy wilderness, incredible wildlife and the colourful communities, that can only be reached by air or sea, makes Greenland the perfect introduction to the Arctic and all the adventures it has to offer.

Sitting deep in the Arctic circle’s flow and pack ice are over 35.000 scenic islands – Baffin Island being the biggest – well known for their scenic wilderness of fjords, icy peaks, glaciers, arctic wildlife, and a history rich with Inuit culture. This is the Far North: the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. These seemingly inhospitable islands are littered with diverse wildlife, birdlife, plants and flowers. Famous for spotting whales, seals, walruses, Arctic wolves, foxes, and sometimes polar bear, caribou and the musk ox (although sightings of these majestic mammals in this area are infrequent) and the abundance of seabirds that nest in glacial nooks and crannies, and high-up on icy cliffs. This is a nature photographer’s dream destination.

Iceland is a land shaped by fire and ice, where active volcanoes, expansive lava fields, and immense glaciers meet the wild waters of the North Atlantic. Its rugged coastline shelters thriving seabird colonies, from puffins perched on basalt cliffs to fulmars soaring along dramatic headlands. Geothermal forces carve steaming valleys and mineral-rich hot springs, while the island’s deep fjords provide refuge for whales and other marine life. Settled by Norse explorers more than a millennium ago, Iceland remains a place where nature and culture coexist in striking harmony, offering travelers a vivid glimpse into the geological and human history of the Arctic frontier.

A journey to the North Pole is unlike any other—a slow, powerful advance through drifting pack ice aboard a true luxury icebreaker like Le Commandant Charcot. Here, at the top of the world, the horizon dissolves into white and sky, and polar bears roam a realm shaped only by wind and light. As the ship carves its path north, guests enjoy a rare balance of exploration and elegance, with expert guides, quiet moments on deck, and the profound stillness of the Arctic Ocean. Reaching 90° North is more than a destination; it’s a poetic encounter with the purest edge of the planet.
